Once a great emperor named Akbar was very found of Guru Nanak and requested to meet him at a mosque. The emperor, Guru Nanak, and everyone else went into to the mosque to do their prayers Guru Nanak was laughing. Everyone in the mosque were offended by Guru Nanak laughing. After prayers Akbar asked Guru Nanak why he was laughing. Guru Nanak explained that when either the mullah or the emperor were doing their prayers none of them were thinking about God. They had their own problems in their minds.
We must remember that prayers are not phrases that will get us closer to God. We must understand the prayers and think and contemplate about the Lord when prayer. Mere words can be recited by anyone but a true devotee must have faith in his devotion to the Lord. During prayers we must forget about the surrounding worldly problems and just think about the Lord.
