(Short Story, as told by Bhagavan SRI SATHYA SAI BABA)
One day, an old lady came to Ramakrishna Paramahamsa with her 10-year-old grandson.

She prostrated before him and said: "Master! I have come to seek your advice.
This boy is my grandson. He lost his father and mother when he was just a child
of five. I have been taking care of him. He is very fond of sweets. He eats so
much that his health is deteriorating day by day. The doctors have advised him
not to eat sweets but this fellow does not pay any heed to their advice.

However, he has great respect and admiration for you. So I have come to request
you to stop the boy from eating sweets. I am sure, you alone can do this".

Ramakrishna said: "Mother, don't worry, come with your grandson after a month.
In the meanwhile I shall think of a plan to convince the boy that one's health
is very important, more important even than wealth".

The old woman thanked him and took leave of him. She came with her grandson exactly after a month.

Both of them paid their salutations to the master.
Ramakrishna made the boy sit beside him and said: "My dear boy! Remember, one's
real wealth is health. Unless you take proper care of your health, you will not
be able to grow into a strong and healthy young man. You will not be able to do
anything great in life if you are weak. When something that we eat does not
suit our constipation, we should give up eating that item. From tomorrow you
should not eat sweets. After some time you may eat moderately. You are a nice
boy and will listen to me, will you not?".

The boy nodded his head and promised that he would not eat sweets.

The old woman sent the boy on some errand just to have confidential talk with the master.

"Master! May I ask you a question?" said the old woman.

"Certainly mother", replied Ramakrishna.

"Master! This advice, which you have given today to my grandson, you could have
given last month itself. Why did you ask me to come again after a month? I
don't understand".

Ramakrishna replied with an understanding smile: "Mother! I myself eat lot of
sweets. How can I advise the boy to do something that I am not doing myself?
One has no right to preach anything to others before practicing it himself. So
I asked for some time. This one month I did not eat sweets.

So I have earned the right to advise your grandson."

The old woman marveled at the righteous conduct of Ramakrishna. She fell at his
feet and took leave of him.

Sadhana

This is obtained from one of Sathya Sai Mailing Lists - :

Sathya Sai Baba says, that there are three types of sadhanas-

1. Meena Sadhana - like the fish

Meena Sadhana can be explained by remembering that fish can survive only in water. The moment it is taken out of water, it perishes. Similarly meena sadhana is one which can be only in solitude. If you sit in public, the sadhana will not be successful. Being unable to concentrate when he is mixed up with other people, to be able to get concentration in solitude is called Meena sadhana.

2. Mriga Sadhana - like the animal

Mriga sadhana is that in which one can get concentration on the earth only. You cannot go elsewhere, say into water, and do it. As in this case, there are some people who can get concentration only when they are sitting in company with others. They cannot get concentration in solitude. If they are alone they begin to think of their family problems.

3. Kurma Sadhana - like the tortoise

On the other hand, the tortoise can live equally well either in water or on earth. So, if we say that one's sadhana is like kurma sadhana or one is able to concentrate like a tortoise, we mean that the person is able to concentrate irrespective of whether he is alone or sitting in company with others. This is called kurma sadhana.

Short History of Sathya Sai Baba

Original Article from www.sathyasai.org

Sathya Sai Baba was born in Puttaparthi, a small village in South India, on 23 November 1926. As a child, he demonstrated exemplary qualities of compassion, generosity, and wisdom, which clearly distinguished him from the other children of his village.

On 29 October 1940, at the age of 14, he declared to his family and to the people of his village that he would henceforth by known as Sai Baba and that his mission was to bring about the spiritual regeneration of humanity by demonstrating and teaching the highest principles of truth, righteous conduct, peace, and divine love.

His mission was further amplified in a letter he wrote to his brother in 1947. I have a task, he said, To foster all mankind and ensure for all of them lives full of bliss. I have a vow: To lead all who stray away from the straight path again into goodness and save them. I am attached to a work that I love: To remove the sufferings of the poor and grant them what they lack.

Sai Baba's ashram, built by his devotees close to the village where he was born, was inaugurated on 23 November 1950. It is called Prasanthi Nilayam (the Abode of Divine Peace). It has been the gathering place of millions of spiritual pilgrims of various faiths from all over the world. Every day, Sai Baba graciously walks among them to guide, comfort, console, and uplift them.

The small temple dedicated in 1950 has grown into a spiritual oasis of unprecedented magnitude. The temple and the darshan area in front of it, which is completely covered by a beautiful roof, together encompass an area that is over 10,000 square yards. During the period 14-23 November 1995, the celebrations of the 70th birthday of Sathya Sai Baba took place in Prasanthi Nilayam. More than one million people, including the President and Prime Minister of India, assembled in Prasanthi Nilayam to pay homage to Sathya Sai Baba during the 70th birthday celebrations.

In a discourse on 29 September 1960 (Chapter 31 of Sathya Sai Speaks volume 1), Sathya Sai Baba said this:

I will be in this mortal human form for 59 years more and I shall certainly achieve the purpose of this avatar; do not doubt it. I will take My own time to carry out My Plan so far as you are concerned. I cannot hurry because you are hurrying.

I may sometimes wait until I can achieve ten things at one stroke; just as an engine is not used to haul one coach, but awaits until sufficient haulage in proportion to its capacity is ready. But My Word will never fail; it must happen as I will.

This means that He is expected to leave His body 2019.
